Mexico has lots of fiestas but on Dia del Nino there is a special Kids' Day carnival in late February or early March with parades, music, food, drink, dancing, fireworks and fun. On 12 December children are taken to the Basilica de Guadalupe dressed in brilliant indigenous costumes.

Some of the best things to see and do in Mexico are within a day's travel of the capital. Archaeological sites can be fun if the kids are into climbing pyramids and exploring tunnels. The ancient city of Teotihuacan - the site of two huge, spectcular pyramids - is an easy day trip. The region also has volcanoes, ruins and national parks. One of the best places for kids to see wildlife is African Safari east of Mexico City.

If you intend to travel tomore isolated towns and villages renting a car or taking an organised tour is often easier and more convenient than the bus for families. Kids will be amazed at the cliff divers in Acapulco and love the handicrafts(masks, marionettes, musical instruments)found in most towns.
